Lancaster Maritime Museum

The Lancaster Maritime Museum occupies Custom House, a Georgian building constructed in 1764 on St. George’s Quay. It served as a customs house for the Port of Lancaster during the city’s prosperous trading era in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The museum showcases Lancaster’s maritime history, including its involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.

Paranormal activity has been reported in the building for decades. Staff and visitors have described unexplained footsteps echoing through empty rooms and corridors, particularly on the upper floors. Some have claimed to see the apparition of a man in period clothing, believed to be a former customs official, walking through walls and disappearing.

One of the most frequently reported phenomena is the sound of disembodied voices and whispers, often heard in the exhibition areas. These voices sometimes seem to be engaged in conversation, though no one is visibly present. Cold spots and sudden temperature drops have been experienced by museum staff, even on warm days.

Objects in the museum have allegedly moved on their own, with displays being rearranged overnight when the building was locked and empty. Some visitors have reported feeling watched or followed as they explore the exhibits, particularly in the areas related to the slave trade.

In the basement, which once held goods awaiting customs clearance, people have reported feeling a sense of oppression and unease. Some sensitives claim to have picked up on residual energy from the building’s past, including impressions of fear and despair associated with the slave trade.
